Ingredients

Scale

For the Dough:

3 ½ cups all-purpose flour (plus more for dusting)

1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast

1 ½ tsp salt

1 tbsp sugar

1 cup warm water (110°F/43°C)

½ cup whole milk, warm

2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted (plus extra for brushing)

Instructions

Activate the Yeast:
In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.

Mix the Dough:
In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture, warm milk, and melted butter. Mix until a dough forms.

Knead:
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8–10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. You can also use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 6–8 minutes.

First Rise:
Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean towel or plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm spot for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.

Shape the Dough:
Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf. Place into a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan.

Second Rise:
Cover and let rise again for 30–45 minutes, until the dough domes slightly over the top of the pan.

Bake:
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake for 30–35 minutes, until golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped.

Cool & Serve:
Remove from pan and brush with melted butter if desired. Let cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

  • Flour Options: You can swap 1 cup of all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour for a nuttier flavor and added fiber.

  • Dough Too Sticky? Add a tablespoon of flour at a time while kneading until it’s manageable.

  • Make It Ahead: After shaping the dough, cover and refrigerate overnight. Let it come to room temperature before baking.

  • Add-Ins: Stir in herbs, shredded cheese, or seeds before the first rise for added flavor.
